“Everything is a gift.”
-Gavin Frye
What does it mean to live an authentic life?
One might argue that it means everything. Gavin Frye explores what creates an authentic life in his book “The Real You: Leading Your Life From Your Authentic Self.”
Gavin has been on a spiritual journey for much of his life. He sees life as an opportunity to grow, and growth comes through the lessons we all experience.
“It’s my experience that this planet is a school.”
And what comes out of this school? Lessons in awareness, consciousness, and the opportunity to find our authentic selves. We all develop a false self in response to trauma, according to Gavin. It’s a coping mechanism. But it’s one that utimately hinders our progress through life. Our adaptive behaviors that started out helping us to survive actually become life limiting rather than life expansive.
“We keep responding to trauma when it’s no longer present.”
And that rote response doesn’t help us. Gavin notes that our very identity gets woven into the ways we we’ve adapted. To seek our authentic self, those habits have to be seen, examined, and released. It can be daunting to deconstruct an aspect of our identity, even if it’s no longer serving us. But the result of that inner work leads to ever greater authenticity and the opportunity to create a life of meaning.
Gavin has had his share of bumps in the road, and some of his stories are quite extraordinary. Come listen in to a conversation of the human journey and all the wisdom that can arise from it.
